I'm Not a F*cking Neuroscientist - book cover by Sherry Routledge

Every single time you touch the body, you are communicating with the nervous system. The question is whether you are communicating clearly… or whether your hands are basically sending neurological drunk texts.

You do not need a neuroscience degree to be a better therapist.

You do not need to memorize every pathway, receptor, tract, chemical, and brain region just so you can help the person on your table.

But if you treat pain, movement, strength, guarding, inflammation, sensitivity, tightness, weakness, or "my MRI says I'm falling apart" people…

You need to understand the nervous system.

Because spoiler alert: you are already working with it.

Neuroscience for manual therapists who don't want to sound like insufferable know-it-alls

Most neuroscience explanations are either so academic you need a nap and a translator, or so watered down they become useless.

This ebook is neither.

This is neuroscience for the treatment room. For the therapist who wants to know:

Why did that pain change so fast?

Why did their strength come back in seconds?

Why did the pain move?

Why did it come back?

Why does that MRI report sound like a death sentence when the client still moves fine?

Why are we still pretending muscles have personalities?

You don't need to become a neuroscientist. You need to become a better therapist.

Big difference.

Your education wasn't useless.
It was incomplete.

Most of us were taught a very tissue-heavy version of manual therapy.

And listen, tissues still matter. Of course they do.

But anatomy only tells you what is there.

Neurology helps explain what the hell it is doing.

If you are still explaining every treatment result with "I released the muscle" or "I broke up adhesions," we need to talk.

This ebook is that talk.

What this ebook is really about

This is not a textbook.

This is not a research flex.

This is not a 300-page attempt to make you feel stupid.

This is a survival guide for manual therapists who want to understand enough neuroscience to stop using outdated explanations and start asking better clinical questions.

Inside, we talk about:

And why therapists do not actually "fix" people.

Because we don't. We influence. We communicate. We look for results. We watch for change. We help the body find a better option.

And that is already pretty damn cool.

This is for you if…

You are a manual therapist who:

Works with people in pain.

Wants better explanations than "the muscle was tight."

Knows pain is more complicated than tissue damage.

Wants to explain treatment better to clients.

Is willing to question old models without throwing anatomy in the garbage.

Has ever said "release" and then immediately wondered what you actually meant.

Is tired of pretending posture explains everything.

Wants to understand neuroscience without drowning in academic nonsense.

Likes science, but not science cosplay.

Wants to be more confident, curious, and clinically useful.

THIS IS ESPECIALLY FOR YOU IF YOU HAVE EVER THOUGHT:

Exactly. That's why I wrote it.

"I KNOW SOMETHING IS HAPPENING UNDER MY HANDS… BUT I NEED A BETTER WAY TO EXPLAIN IT."

What you'll learn

Three parts. No filler. No lab coat required.

PART ONE

Your nervous system isn't trying to ruin your day

The nervous system is not some fragile drama queen trying to sabotage your client. It is a communication and decision-making system.

Sometimes it protects.

Sometimes it overprotects.

Sometimes it gets loud.

Sometimes it gets sensitive.

Sometimes it changes fast.

We break down what the nervous system actually does, how pain works, why nociception is not pain, why inflammation is not automatically the enemy, and why the body is usually trying to protect you, even when it is being wildly annoying.

PART TWO

The body isn't broken

This is where we go after some of the classics.

"Your glutes are asleep."

"More pressure gets better results."

"Your fascia is tight."

"The pain is where the problem is."

"Your posture is causing your pain."

"Your MRI says you're degenerating."

"Everything is connected."

Some of those ideas contain a tiny bit of truth. Some have been beaten to death. Some need to be taken outside and retired.

This section helps you understand muscles, fascia, posture, imaging, pressure, movement, referred pain, and whole-body connections without turning the body into a conspiracy board.

Everything is connected. But not everything is relevant. Please tattoo that somewhere.

PART THREE

Your nervous system is basically a giant learning machine

Change is not always linear. Symptoms can come back. That does not always mean the treatment failed.

The nervous system learns through experience, repetition, movement, safety, threat, context, and feedback.

This section gets into neuroplasticity, motor learning, clinical reasoning, why things "wear off," and how to use science without becoming the person nobody wants to sit beside at lunch.

You'll learn how to think in hypotheses, test your ideas, look for results honestly, and update when the body gives you better information.

Because the body gets the final vote. Not your favourite technique. Not your favourite tissue. Not your favourite guru. The body.

You'll walk away understanding things like…

01

Pain is real, but it is not a damage meter.

02

Inflammation is not automatically bad.

03

Fascia matters, but it is not magic.

04

MRI reports are not fortune cookies.

05

Touch is information.

13

Symptoms returning does not erase improvement.

14

Neuroscience should make you more curious, not more annoying.

07

06

Therapists do not fix people.

The nervous system learns.

08

Nociception is not pain.

09

Muscles do not have personalities.

10

Posture is an output, not a moral failing.

11

More pressure is not automatically better input.

12

Movement makes the conversation real.

The goal is not to sound smarter

The goal is not to throw around big words so everyone knows you read a paper. The goal is to become more useful in the treatment room.

To ask better questions.

To stop scaring clients with garbage explanations.

To stop pretending one tissue explains every problem.

To stop worshipping whatever the tissue of the decade happens to be.

To understand that manual therapy is communication with a living, adapting, protecting, learning nervous system.

You'll learn how to think in hypotheses, test your ideas, look for results honestly, and update when the body gives you better information.

I wrote this because manual therapists need neuroscience, but they do not need it wrapped in academic ego, research snobbery, or boring textbook language.

We need science that actually helps us think better with our hands.

This ebook is blunt, practical, slightly profane, and written for the people actually working with clients, not hiding in a lab arguing about terminology on the internet.

You are still not a f*cking neuroscientist. Good. You do not need to be. You need to be a better therapist.
